High potential testing or hipot is a term given to a class of electrical safety testing instruments used to verify electrical insulation in finished appliances, cables or other wired assemblies, printed circuit boards, electric motors, and transformers. The test is designed to detect insufficient gaps or clearances between conductive parts and earth. It should also show whether degradation, such as pinholes or cracks in insulation and other protection devices, has resulted through production processes or wear and tear. Hipot and ground continuity tests are required on 100% of production for any electronic or electrical product certified by safety agencies such as UL, CE, TUV, IEC, or NEMKO.
