Ground resistance testers are used for the design and testing of electrical grounding systems. They are commonly used by power companies, industrial plants, CATV and telephone companies and for antenna systems.
When good grounding systems are first installed they have low earth ground resistance values. Conditions such as corrosive soil with high moisture content, high salt content and high temperatures eat away at the grounding rods and their connections. As a result of these conditions the resistance value increases overtime causing poor grounding. Poor grounding can be very dangerous and increases the risk of equipment failure. Problems that arise are exposure to the risk of electric shock, instrumentation errors, harmonic distortion issues, power factor problems and a host of possible intermittent dilemmas.
To avoid such problems it is highly recommended that all grounds and ground connections are checked annually. Ground resistance testers are troubleshooting tools to help you maintain uptime.
